I recently received a note from a patient's cardiologist. The patient presented with severe periodontitis. A culture revealed that he had a high level of anaerobic pathogens associated with aggressive periodontitis. We placed in on a metronidazole and amoxicillin regimen as well as providing him with perioscopic scaling.
Interesting enough the letter from the cardiologist confirmed something that has been talked about in dentistry for a long time. Whether inflammation in the oral contributes to cardiovascular susceptibility. The cardiologist's words speak for themselves. It is reassuring to get this kind affirmation of the things we do and how we can benefit more than just the dentition of the patient.
As always, I appreciate your feedback.
