We encounter a patient that has an extraordinary amount of calculus and has not seen a dentist for a long time. This particular gentleman had a great deal of dentistry placed in the past, but because of personal issues had not been to a dentist in many years.
As you can see from Picture #1, the calculus occupies not just the area around the teeth but the floor of his mouth. I had questions about the viability of these teeth until I could examine him and that couldn't happen until I removed the calculus.
Upon removal of the calculus he had a huge soft tissue defect. The concerns were whether this would heal, whether we would have to do soft tissue grafting and whether these teeth were viable.
However, a final picture, after he had debridement and learned to begin to brush his teeth, showed remarkable healing of the area of the large ulceration caused by the calculus.
Sometimes people who have an extraordinary amount of debris respond much better than those who have minimal debris and maximum breakdown. This is such a case.
As always, I would appreciate your feedback
Yours truly,
