Advances in periodontics have paved the way for a new procedure that effectively deals with gum disease and the complications it can often bring. Laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP®), is an innovative treatment that seeks to restore bone health rather than remove areas of the bone damaged by the disease. At the office of Westchester Center for Periodontal & Implant Excellence, our skilled professionals will speak with you about the procedure and if it is right for you.
More comfortable treatment with better outcomes
Periodontal pockets that are the hallmark of gum disease are most often treated with surgical cuts to remove gingiva (“gums”) and trim the irregular bone, thus reducing pocket depth. This treatment results in gum recession. While traditional surgery can be successful in helping retain teeth, there is a compromise in terms of comfort and esthetics. With LANAP, there is no “cutting and trimming” of the gingiva, helping patients keep their teeth without those drawbacks.
Laser gum surgery is not only a more convenient way of treating gum disease, it also promotes better bone health. Stimulating the bone with the laser encourages the regrowth of bone lost to gum disease without the use of scalpels or sutures. Teeth that have become loose can be saved, avoiding the need for extraction. Doctors simply slip the fine tip of the laser in between the teeth and gums, allowing its special wavelength to vaporize the bacteria and diseased tissue while keeping healthy tissue intact.
