The devil is in the details. This adage means that something may seem simple, but the details are complex and likely to cause problems. In the world of dentistry, plaque is one of the main “devils.” Plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—leads to gum disease. One of a periodontist’s main missions is the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease.
At the office of Westchester Center for Periodontal & Implant Excellence, we know that confidence in your smile and overall oral health affects the way you feel about yourself personally, socially and professionally. Brushing teeth reaches only the outer, inner and biting surfaces. But what about the spaces between your teeth, where plaque’s toxins and food debris love to congregate? Those areas need as much attention as the rest of your teeth. Small hidden spaces between your teeth can cause big damage. Accumulated plaque leads to tartar (a darker and much harder deposit), gingivitis (a precursor to periodontal disease) and, eventually, severe periodontitis (gum disease). It’s downhill from there.
Here are the gory details: As plaque accumulates at the gum line, its toxins can easily penetrate and irritate gum tissue and bring on tartar and gingivitis. Gingivitis is marked by sensitivity, swelling and/or bleeding when cleaning between your teeth. The chronic inflammation from severe periodontitis causes the bone and tissue around teeth to deteriorate and the teeth themselves to acquire serious decay. They may even fall out or need to be pulled.
People who don’t clean between their teeth put their oral health at great risk as each day passes. A dental professional will tell you which interdental tools (brushes, rubber picks, string floss, water flossers) are best for you.
